Debt Negotiations & Settlement

Sometimes you find yourself so deep in debt that you can't dig your way out. In these situations you may be interested in credit card debt settlement. Credit card debt settlement is a way to reduce your debts with the creditor or collection agency to only pay back a fraction of the original amount owed. This method works because you pay less yet the creditor still recovers some of their loss.

However, you may not have to worry about credit card debt settlement if the statute of limitations is up in your state and the debt no longer appears on your credit report. Legally, credit companies must recover the debt in a period of time specified by the state or the debt is no longer recoverable after this time period. This is to say that if your state has a three year statute of limitation and the three years are up that you don't have to worry about credit card debt settlement because you are no longer responsible for the debt. If the credit card debt has disappeared from your credit report then you can really shout hallelujah. However, it may take up to seven years for negative information to be removed from your report. If this amount of time has passed and you have not noticed the negative information being dropped from your report then you can dispute the information.

But, you may be in a situation where your debt is new and your debt has been sent to a collection agency. In this situation credit card debt settlement still works. It just depends on what type of debt you have. There are secured and unsecured debts. Secured debts are homes and cars while unsecured debts are credit cards, student loans, medical bills, personal loans, and the like.

A good rule of thumb is to offer 25% of the total amount of the debt. So, if you have a collection agency trying to collect $1000 from you then you should offer them $250 or 25% of the total debt. This may seem like a very small amount that the collection agency will never accept, but the truth is many times they will because they will still make money. Bad debt is often purchased by collection agencies for less than seven cents on the dollar, so even offering them 25% of the debt they will make money.

In order to achieve credit card debt settlement that benefits you then you must be strong and refuse to allow the collection agency to be in control of the proceedings. If you are in control then the collection agency will respond to you. Just be patient and keep trying.
